Breaking out of the box

After many years, I finally decided it was time to enter the blogging world. I've thought about it so many times. Today, as my class was working on The Great Cookie Caper activity, I looked around my room and thought "This would be a great blog post!" So, here I am, jumping in, feet first, into the world of teacher blogs.

Now, about the Great Cookie Caper...

I am a huge fan of breakout.edu.  If you're not familiar, think escape rooms with boxes and locks instead of a room. Please check out  breakoutedu.com. The games are free if you sign up as a beta tester. The engagement you experience with your kids just can't be beat!

Sone times, though, you just don't want the hassle of all those locks.  My sweet kiddos really struggle with word problems. They continue to lack confidence in their reading and math skills. After months of of watching them, I realized something new needed to happen. The Bill Hefner Math Detective Agency was born. This began with a an "induction ceremony". (Read, I made a HUGE production about their rookie status.) Badges and identification cards were created, laminated, and presented.

And the Great Cookie Caper began...

Students chose their own groups in which to work. They had their clues and away they went.

Watching them get excited about solving multi-step word problems was so much fun!!!! They LOVED every minute of it. When they discovered that our principal stole the cookies, they lost it!

Now that are bona fide math detectives, they work hard every week to earn a promotion. Their efforts have tripled since we started this concept.
